Exceptional communist-born sports statues wrestle for social survival
and recognition in the dynamic 21st century cultural landscape.
a short animated documentary film
13 minutes
stop motion mixed with 2D animation
Cyclists, swimmers, or hockey players – phases of movement frozen in time dignify the depiction of a single moment of human will. The passion for sports and the noble Olympic idea during the times of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia characterise the sculptor, Zdeněk Němeček.
How can we perceive artwork from that period in today's context?
Can we condemn it solely due to the era of its creation?
The journey to understanding an artwork that emerged beyond our ideology and time is narrated through a mixed media format, incorporating various animation techniques mostly based on the 3D scans of Němeček's entire body of work, with the usage of diverse archive footage.
