a short animated documentary
Desire to Win
DIRECTED BY MICHAELA REŽOVÁ
CZECH REPUBLIC

Sculptures come to life to tell about their author's artistic excellency
within a politically-defined era.
animated documentary
10 minutes
stop motion mixed with 2D animation
Intended release: 2024

Cyclists, swimmers or hockey players – phases of movement frozen in time
are the dignified depiction of one moment of the human will.
Passion for sport and a noble Olympic idea in the times of communist regime
in Czechoslovakia are characteristics of the sculptures' author – Zdeněk Němeček.
He believed in the time in which he lived and its political regime.
How can we observe his work today?
Can we condemn an artwork just because of its creator
and because of the time when it was created?
The film explores Němeček’s work and story through an art experiment
with the sculptures themselves and shares the passion of a slowly forgotten artist.
Visually Desire To Win combines old sport magazines, photos and video archives
with animated miniatures of Němeček's sculptures in different materials
(gypsum, clay and 3D print).
